Finish (or start) your first book of 2014! While I've already finished mine, I'm moving onto my second read for winter break, which is David Sedaris's Dress Your Family in Courduroy or Denim. I think the best reads for snow are either cheesy, young adult novels that you're revisiting in your adulthood (something by Sarah Dessen, maybe?) or something vastly complicated and addicting like the Game of Thrones book series (which I haven't yet read).
Netflix your little heart out! I have only had Netflix for about six months now, and it's completely changed my life.. though I'm not sure if it's for the better or worse. I'm constantly finding new things to watch! Binge-watching something while snowed in is really fun, especially if it's something relatively cheesy. I plan on watching Frances Ha tonight, and though not on Netflix instant, I've been watching the first season of Elementary to catch up.
Clean! I know this doesn't sound all that enticing, but if you're anything like me, your room gets a little out of hand when you're busy with work and/or school. Just before the holidays, my room took a turn for the worse, resembling the aftermath of Taz from Looney Tunes rummaging through my things. Take this time inside to organize. It's also a great time to remember to wash your bedsheets and blankets! Wash your blanket just before bed, so when you pull it onto you, it's nice and warm.
Pamper yourself! Some things that make me happier when I have the winter blues is spending time on myself. While I don't necessarily mean throwing all of my money away into clothes shopping online (but hey, do it if there's something special you didn't get for the holidays!), I do mean just simply taking extra care of myself. For example, I unfortunately have the type of hair that absolutely has to be washed everyday or looks completely dreadful, so I try to set out days where I can do a Wen treatment on my hair to go easy on it. Since I was so busy with the holidays, I didn't get a chance to do this in a while, so I chose to do it today! Some other things you may consider: applying a face mask, finally getting rid of your Christmas/New Year's manicure for something fresh, lathering on some subtle self tanner, or give your body a good brushing!
Renovate your music collection. If you're like me, you still use iTunes for most of your music. Though I use Pandora for a lot of things (working out, for example), I still have a very large music library on my computer that is constantly growing. However, there are times when I stop adding things for a long period of time (ahem, I only just got the new Beyonce) or there are things that I've never liked/listened to/or have grown out of. I'm tired of having my iTunes cluttered with things I am just going to skip, so I like to take some time to go through and find duplicates, delete songs I don't care for, and put things into playlists that I have to listen to more. I end up removing so much, but often end up adding even more music to make up for it! For me, this is also going to mean making lists of records that I want to buy to start my collection, because I received a record player for Christmas. If you have any suggestions, let me know what I should be listening to!
Some other fun things to do while stuck inside: play boardgames with your family (I played the Cheers trivia game with my mom and brother the other day, it was hilarious), cook/bake, do a makeover on yourself or someone in your family (maybe even your dog?), write write write!, go through your closets/drawers to see what you can part with and donate, play some old school video games like MarioKart and remember how impossible Rainbow Road is, go through that old stack of magazines and read old articles or cut out pictures for inspiration, create a vision board or journal!
What do you like to do when it snows? Are you the kind to go out and sled down a huge hill or are you more like me and love to hide out indoors?
